ST. PAUL TEENS WIN 2011 NORTH AMERICAN
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

Teen entrepreneurs take North American title by leveraging social media to promote their company

St. Paul, Minn. – A team from St. Paul’s High School for Recording Arts has been selected by Junior Achievement as winners of the 2011 North American JA Company of the Year Competition. The teen entrepreneurs who own and operate “L.Y.M.E” (“Leave Your Mark Everywhere”) were among 14 other competing U.S. and Canadian companies. The event, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., culminated in meetings between the U.S. teen entrepreneurs and their Congressional Members and staff on Capitol Hill, and with U.S. Small Business Administration head Karen Mills.

Team “L.Y.M.E,” produced customized radio commercials for their clients and aired them on the school’s radio program. State Farm® in Minnesota sponsored the team financially and with volunteers.

The annual North American JA Company of the Year Competition is a contest of business skills, ingenuity and innovation that focuses on the accomplishments of U.S. and Canadian JA Company Program© students, ages 15-19, during the 2010-2011 academic year. Currently reaching more than 380,000 young people a year globally, JA Company Program gives teens the skills to start and run their own businesses under the mentorship of a local business volunteer.

The teen-run companies participated in a trade fair where they promoted and sold their products and pitched their companies to a panel of judges comprised of business leaders. The companies were evaluated on their financial performance, their presentation to the judging panel and, in a new addition to this year’s event, on a commercial they self-produced and posted on Facebook. Junior Achievement students currently use JA Company Program Social—a Facebook application—to discuss and help run their student companies.

“The North American JA Company of the Year Competition is an exciting opportunity for Junior Achievement students to demonstrate the teamwork, leadership and innovative thinking that will help them drive success in the business world,” said Gina Blayney, president of Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest. “Through this competition, Junior Achievement is empowering these teen entrepreneurs to own their economic success through business ownership.”

The High School for Recording Arts team was led by Math Teacher Sayra Loftus, in her first year with the organization. HSRA is a charter high school in St. Paul that has been serving youth at risk of not graduating for the past twelve years. Said Loftus, “Having never worked with the curriculum before, the task of running the JA Company Program at HSRA was daunting at first. It was amazing to see each team member transform from a high school student consumed by the typical social-emotional issues of their age into young, confident, and focused business men and women.” Team members presenting in Washington DC were LYME President, Christopher Gavin, LaShawn Williams, LaDawn Morris, Rosalee Abrams-Carter, and Kurtis Greenwood. Other members of the team were: Christine Bristol, Tony Fulford, CJ Nelson-Conner, Davion Nixon-Tillman, Silk Lesure, Rachel Johansen and Mikaela Mulloy.

High School for Recording Arts Tornado Relief Concert

Posted by Bryan Rossi on June 23rd, 2011

Rock The Cause is proud to announce a partnership effort with the MN High School of Recording Arts to host a North Minneapolis tornado relief fundraiser for those affected by the storms. Several students and a faculty member were affected by the May 22, 2011 storm. The event will be hosted by the school on Saturday July 9th, 2011, with all proceeds benefiting the North Minneapolis Tornado Recovery Fund.

The event welcomes all ages, and will feature the school’s student Gospel and Urban Music Groups alongside some of the best local hip-hop artists in the Twin Cities. A free style contest will allow aspiring poets and artists to showcase their spoken word talents.

Created, organized and planned by HSRA students, this event is a shining example of how Rock the Cause works with young people to inspire and engage the community. “We want people to remember that recovery is long term. In six months the north side will still need people to help out. We can not forget!” said HSRA student Tony Fulford a.k.a. “MC Misfit” who contacted Rock the Cause to assist the students in planning the event.

Chaska Teen Talks to President Obama on Youth Issues

Posted by Bryan Rossi on June 14th, 2011

Chaska teen Esther Lee was one of 10 youths that briefed President Obama on issues facing teens.

Lee was chosen to participate in a group of 10 young adults who traveled from all over the country to the White House to speak with the presidents senior staff on these issues. President Obama joined half way through.

Lee attended as a representative of Minnesota Alliance with Youth, on which she serves as the Youth Co-Chair.

She spoke specifically about dropout prevention and the achievement gap, citing discussions and programs her local group had for keeping kids involved and engaged in school.

A program she mentioned specifically was 26 Seconds Campaign by Minnesota’s own High School of the Recording Arts. The program is a national dropout prevention program of America’s Promise Alliance and State Farm with NBA All-Star LeBron James that aims to teach youth through music, video  and  the spoken word.

Other issues addressed at the meeting were jobs for youth, youth entrepreneurship, energy and the environment, racial profiling and LGBTQ issues.

The meeting took place on June 7 with Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Nancy-Ann DeParle, Senior Policy Advisor for Education Zakiya Smith, Director of Digital Strategy Macon Phillips and Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement Kalpen Modi in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.

Lee will be a senior at Chaska High School in the fall. She wants to become a teacher.

The Minnesota Alliance with Youth is Minnesota’s leading group in youth activism. For more information on the group visit their website.

On April 14th, 2011, five students represented HSRA’s Junior Achievement company at a regional JA Company Program competition. The company was judged on an oral presentation, a ten-page company report and a panel interview. Throughout the process of starting and operating L.Y.M.E. and preparing for the competition, the team overcame many obstacles and was able to come out on top–winning the JA Company of the Year in the Upper Midwest! They are now eligible to apply to be in the North American JA competition in Washington D.C. to compete with JA companies from all over Canada and the U.S.

Many congratulations are in order for those who represented HSRA at the regional competition: Chris Gavin, Kurtis Greenwood, LaShawn Williams, LaDawn Morris and Ro Abrams-Carter. Many thanks are also in order to the other members of L.Y.M.E. who were unable to attend: Tony Fulford, Davion Nixon, Christine Bristol, Rachel Johansen, CJ Conner, Silk Lesure and Mikaela Mulloy. It was because of the hard work of all of these students, along with facilitator Sayra Loftus, that L.Y.M.E. was such a great success.
